From Mexico to Africa, the Academy of LDS Dentists is reaching out...and
touching lives. As one of our major objectives, the international service
projects involve offering seminars and presentations, supporting dental
schools in underserved areas, purchasing equipment to set up satellite
clinics at rural locations, influencing struggling dental students in
poor countries, and working in clinics to provide dental care for needy
patients. The international service projects program has succeeded beyond
any expectations.
Dentists
and their families, driven by an overwhelming desire to serve, have traveled
to Grenada, Uganda, Trinidad, Mexico and other countries, caring for children
and adults in need of dental care. They offer dental screenings, cancer
screenings and teach preventive dental care. But their influence doesn't
stop at healthcare, they are having a spiritual impact as well.
Dr.
Dale Linton, former president of the Academy, relates how the program
has made a difference in the Caribbean, "When we went to work on the island
of Trinidad, we learned that there were two missionaries that were going
to be transferred off of the island because there wasn't enough work to
keep them busy. By working with the local people, our four-week health
fair generated 1,500 referrals for the missionaries. After that, the church
brought in 20 other missionaries. After that, the church brought in 20
other missionaries to help them catch up. Since then, I understand that
they have brought in 20 more missionaries and have taken the Island of
Trinidad from the West Indies Mission and made it a mission by itself."
