Missionary Medical Advisory Committee Seeks Help

As a member of the Academy of LDS Dentists, you should be aware of the requests made recently by the Missionary Medical Advisory Committee (MMAC), which is seeking assistance from LDS dentists and others of goodwill primarily along the Wasatch Front.

The problem is that too many missionaries are still entering the MTC with untreated dental conditions, the treatment of which interferes with important training time in the MTC and disrupts the missionary's service once in the field. Most such cases are found in missionaries coming from Third World countries. A dental screening system is now in place at the MTC in which missionaries with acute dental problems are identified and referred to dentists who have indicated a willingness to provide humanitarian dental service to them. ADA (Area Dental Advisors) have been called to work with mission presidents in Utah and the West to coordinate contacts and appointments with the missionary and the volunteering office. The intent is to spread the blessings around and not overburden the willing few. As we gain experience, it is hoped the program will extend to the U.S. and Canada.

Many of these missionaries have had little training or experience in proper U.S. standards of acceptable dental hygiene. This is a challenge. The purpose is to restore mouths to health and comfort, eliminate pain and infection, and improve function not provide full mouth rehabilitation (although you will find the accompanying story very touching and a marvelous example of noble dental service). This also underscores the importance of NOT signing the Missionary Application Form for prospective missionaries until all dental treatment has been satisfactorily completed.

The program is evolving and adjustments will be made as we gain experience. Observations, comments, and recommendations can be sent to Dr. Ray Hendrickson, the subcommittee chair, at 435-896-6444, 140 E. 200 No., Richfield, UT 84701.

We believe most Academy members responded to the survey sent out late last year. The response indicating a willingness to serve was impressive and the MMAC thanks you.
