Herb and Karleen Hardy, Dental Missionaries in Indonesia
Surabaya, Indonesia Airlangga Dental School

We have been in Surabaya, Indonesia, for more than a month now. Ramadan fast month and Christmas and New Year's holidays have delayed us some. We have met with Dr. Hardy a number of times and have begun the process of revitalizing the Airlangga project (stopped by September 11). We have met most of the faculty. Sister Hardy will be teaching English to the faculty three days per week, while I will be assisting at the dental school.

There are not many funds left for the Airlangga Dental Project, but we hope to be able to purchase a dental unit and other small equipment items for a minor surgery room that was designed by Dr. Terry Morris. We will probably try to write a new project for two or three more complete dental units and possibly two portable units to be used in other areas outside the city. We will be helping with infection control and practice management. We will also be teaching English at Wijaya Kusuma University one afternoon per week in addition to teaching English at our local LDS branch building.
The school has provided us with a lovely office.

As one of the activities associated with our new LDS Church Open House, a health fair was held. We did dental screenings with the help of two Indonesian dentists. Referrals were made for those needing treatment. We passed out about 100 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste.

We are enjoying living here in Surabaya. We have a lovely home. We also have a car and a driver who served a mission about 20 years ago in Indonesia. Previously we served a mission in Cambodia, and we love the Asian people.

Elder/Sister Hardy
