Yogyakarta, Indonesia - Gadjah Mada University College of Dentistry:

We, Elder Brent Lee, DDS, MS, and Sister Charlene Lee, arrived November 18, 2002 and have welcomed most warmly at this respected university. We have been front-row guests for two major university functions, complete with our names in the programs, etc. Our purpose for being in Indonesia is two-fold: equipping "an ideal dental clinic" for final-year dental students and teaching English at Gadjah Mada University. We expect to begin teaching English to 60 academic staff (faculty) the 2nd week of January, 2003, as well as 215-220 dental students. The students begin their next semester the 1st week in February.

Gadjah Mada University Dental School has about 900 dental students, both under-graduate and post-graduate. Their new, 5-story "Dental Hospital" is on schedule to be finished in March, 2003. We saw figures of over 8,000 square meters of space, and it is plumbed for 150 dental units in the several clinics. It is truly an impressive structure, being built by the Japanese government. Our current project, which will be in the new building, was just recently clarified by Latter-day Saint Charities, Salt Lake City office, We have enough money in our budget to purchase 3 chairs and some sterilization equipment, with a small amount left to start an "infection control" (clean-up and sterilization) room. We will probably write another project to get the fourth chair. We hope for additional help through LDS Charities to make the infection control room a reality and complete the teaching goal of setting up the "ideal clinic." We would hope this concept will inspire the students to use this as a model in private practice, once they have graduated.

Indonesia is, church-wise, where Brazil was 30-40 years ago. We are living with the pioneers in this country and loving it.

Elder Brent and Sister Lee
