Academy of LDS Dentists President's Message

Dear Colleague:

As I reflect on the academy's accomplishments for 1999, I'm pleased and proud of the things we have been able to do and the lives that we have been able to touch.

I would like to thank the executive committee for their efforts and the energy that they have extended on behalf of the academy. This year we have been able to assist a number of dental students, both domestic and foreign. We know that these recipients will be great future contributors to the academy with their resources. We feel that is a great investment. In addition, we have established a six-operatory dental clinic within the dental school at the University of Lima in Peru. We have been able to secure as a missionary Dr. Rick Meyers from California, who will be there for the next year and a half. He will be teaching the dental students in Peru current and modern dental techniques, assisted by specialists and other clinicians who desire to travel to Peru to lend their expertise. We know by doing this we can touch many, many lives. This is a great example of teaching them "how to fish," rather than just giving them fish.

Our work with the orphanages in Mexico has expanded, and we now have tremendous interest from academy members wanting to serve on various expeditions with choice or Deseret International, or the orphanages. It is our goal to expand these opportunities and increase our efforts, even above what we are doing, to make them more readily available and hopefully to secure funding to help offset some of the cost that you or your staff might incur.

As we enter this new millennium, I'm proud and excited to be a part of the academy. I think that with the accumulative efforts of so many good men, we are going to achieve much, and I think the benefit that we will bring to many lives around the world will be far greater than any of us could ever have envisioned.

It is my goal and my dream that between now and the time I complete me tenure as president, I can secure the funding to establish a significant endowment for our academy and the ongoing humanitarian service we want to render. I express my appreciation to all of you for your support and for your contributions, both financially and with your time. I only encourage you, as we enter this new millennium, that we also look individually and see if we can even expand our contributions, economically and with our time. I hope that you all have a wonderful holiday season, and we look forward to a great and prosperous year 2000. May the Lord bless all of you in your efforts.

Sincerely,

Lowell K. Anderson, DMD
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
