San Marcos Dental School Service Project Update

April 19–23, 2004

Plans are well underway for the fifth service project at the San Marcos Dental School in Lima, Peru. Organizers are planning to have 15 dentists, 4 hygienists, an equipment repairman, and a dental lab technician, along with a number of assistants and other auxiliary personnel.

At least five lectures will be presented to the faculty and students. In addition, volunteers will be providing free dental services to the local people, with the assistance of dental students, who will also provide some of the care. Areas of focus will include operative dentistry, endodontics, and oral surgery. During the last service project, over eight hundred patients were treated.

Currently, eleven dentists have committed to go so four more are needed as well as one more hygienist. One area that needs additional volunteers is endodontics. It is anticipated that five dentists will be required and so far only two have volunteered. Volunteers who speak Spanish are preferred.

Projects of this type are great experiences for those who volunteer. Anyone having questions or an interest in sharing their talents should contact the group organizer, Dr. Greg Hatch, at 480-838-3073 (office) or 480-899-4898 (home). His e-mail address is hyrumhatch@aol.com.
