Spouses Message

By Torrie Klomp

With the coming of spring, I hope you and your family are doing well. The members of the spouses' presidency are looking forward to getting together again with you at the conference, August 17-18, 2001. I have visited with Stacia and Steve from BYU Conferences and Workshops, and it sounds as if this will be the best conference ever. The theme for the conference is "Obedience and Gratitude in Preparation for the Second Coming." You can begin registering for the conference in April. Please look for the brochure around mid-April, and look for future listings on the Website at http://ce.byu.edu/cw/dentist/

I would like to introduce a few presenters who have accepted invitations to speak. Ed Pinegar will speak on the conference theme. Petronella Boot will speak about her experiences during the Holocaust. Jolene Parker, aka the "Food Storage Lady," will introduce ways to keep up on food storage now that the Y2K scare has come and gone. Author Toni Brown will give us a three-second lesson on balancing our lives. A Children's Creative Dance presentation incorporating "Mind, Body, and Spirit" will be presented by the BYU Dance Department faculty. To conclude the conference, pianist Jon Schmidt will entertain and uplift. For a sneak preview of Jon's music, please go to http://www.jonschmidt.com/

At last year's conference, the addition of the mothers' room was greatly appreciated. For those of you who hesitate to come and bring your tiny ones, don't delay any longer. The mothers' room, with the presentations piped in, allows mothers with young children to attend without fear of interruption.

A great big THANK YOU to Gaileen White, our past president, whose cookbook project has brought in over $4,400 to help the children in the orphanage in Guadalajara, Mexico. Gail tells me that there are about forty of the cookbooks left, so if you missed getting one, she has agreed to mail them out for $14.50 each, including shipping! I am planning to grab a few, so you had better hurry--they won't last long! Thanks again to all of you who took the time to send in recipes for the book. Her address is: Gaileen White, 725 Canyon Tree Road, Ontario, OR 97914.

Speaking of fund-raising, Gaileen has set a great example! Although the main goal of the spouses' program hasn't necessarily been to raise money, it seems like such a good idea that I have been thinking of several ideas for the upcoming conference. If you have ideas, please send them to me at tok@panaca.igate.com. Also, another project I have been thinking about is how to get more of our LDS dental friends involved in this great organization.
I suggested to the executive committee and they agreed that the best way to increase the success of the Academy of LDS Dentists is to invite more dentists and spouses to join. As you may have seen in the Church News in December, the people at Church Humanitarian Services now know about the Academy and the work they do and, working with and through them, we can really become servants in the hands of the Lord.

We're looking forward to seeing you all in August along with some new faces! If you have any questions or suggestions, don't hesitate to contact Steve Trost at BYU Conferences and Workshops: cw147mail@byu.edu or 801-422-4853.
