Conference Report --- "A Total Experience" August 16 and 17, 2002

The annual conference was held on the BYU campus in the Harman Continuing Education Building. Members of the Academy from literally around the world, totaling 288, and some with their families, gathered for the traditional two days of fast paced education and entertainment. The lectures were packed with useful information from pediatric dentistry pearls and restorative dentistry to practice management, oral surgery, and practice transition strategies. As usual, it was a challenge to make choices in the afternoon session in order to take it all in. Even though Gordon Christensen was not able to personally attend due to his present church assignment directing the Los Angeles Temple Visitors' Center, his personal touch in arranging another cadre of excellent clinicians was present. The Friday night dinner with our spouses was excellent. We enjoyed special entertainment from Jonathon Coombs at the piano. Our special guests were Elder and Sister John Carmack. After a delicious meal, it was our privilege to receive an update on Elder Carmack's present Church assignment as director of the new Perpetual Education Fund. It was an inspiration to hear of his calling from President Hinckley and receive an update on the progress of this prophetic program as it blesses the lives of so many of our brothers and sisters throughout the world. This year our young family members were easy to spot in their bright yellow conference t-shirts. Through the efforts of their friendly chaperones, they experienced two full days filled with excitement and fun. At the Friday luncheon, we had the privilege to share visually the years of special service experiences of Wayne Chisholm and his wife, Janeen, and family as they worked with the people of the Tongan Islands. Their service inspired us all. Rick Meyers introduced Dr. Alejandro Robles who then greeted us with a message of appreciation for all that the Academy has done for the people and the spreading of the gospel in Peru as a result of the personal special service offered at the San Marcos School of Dentistry. Wayne and Janeen Chisholm and Dale and Stephanie Linton were recognized with special service awards from the Academy. Mike Rockwell turned the gavel of leadership over to our new president, Bret Tobler, with Robert Boyer as president elect. Those who put so much effort into making this conference another huge success are greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing all of you next year. The conference dates for 2003 are August 15-16.
