It was a sobering yet exciting experience to review over 100 applications for those scholarships. There are many young people who struggle financially, who are setting the academic standard for their schools, and who are extremely involved in service to family, church, community, and their future profession. All of the recipients this year are married, and most have children. One is the mother of six! Several are the top students in their class. There are class officers, research assistants, tutors, bishopric counselors, a branch president, and several youth leaders represented. One young father of two delivers papers at 2:00 a.m. and then goes to school. All are working hard to support families and are diligent in controlling finances and time. Another student has a wife with major health difficulties. He has lovingly nursed his wife through multiple transfusions, operations, and treatments. The dental students attend schools throughout the country from Washington to Louisiana; one is from England. The hygiene students are more concentrated in Utah, with California and Idaho represented. It appears we need to get word of the Academy out to hygienists in other places. In addition, the executive committee has allocated $20,000 for foreign scholarships. Those scholarship funds will likely be administered through the Perpetual Education Fund. Funds have also been set aside to purchase two more mobile dental units. Our funds for the next year are also in great shape. We will end this year with about $5,000 surplus. The attendance at the conference was up slightly. The great news is that dues paying membership is up with 632 dentists and 13 hygienists. In addition, generous members have contributed an additional $5,500 for scholarships. Thank you for your support and generosity. |
